Ever thought what is in a life raft?

Have you ever thought about what apparatus are in a life raft or life boat on a cruise ship?  Crew are trained to know this within the first weeks of being on board and if US or UK coast guard do an inspection everyone must have a basic knowledge of what is on these craft.

Hopefully you will never need to use a life boat however here is an example of what is on board.  It has been a few years since I took the test so I will have missed off some things so don't chastise me!  -

One buoyant rescue quoit attached to not less than 30 m of buoyant line

One whistle or equivalent sound signalling device

Pyrotechnic distress signals

One watertight electric flashlight suitable for Morse signalling and, in a watertight container, one spare set of batteries and one spare bulb for the flashlight

One heliograph for signalling to ships and aircraft, with instructions for its use in English and French

For each member of the complement, a food ration totalling not less than 10 000 kJ, in airtight packaging and stowed in a watertight container showing an expiry date

One set of fishing tackle

Thermal protective aids for 10 per cent of the complement of the life raft or two persons, whichever is greater

A rustproof, watertight container or individually sealed units containing 1.5 L of fresh water for each member of the complement

For each member of the complement, six doses of anti-seasickness medicine and one seasickness bag

Two buoyant paddles

Two sponges
