Stores! Ahhhhhhgggggggg

When the word 'Stores' is mentioned on a cruise line watch the faces of the crew drop!

Stores is the word for provisions or stock which every ship has to take on board at thier turnaround port.  When you are embarking the ship look down from the gangway or the side of the ship which you are docked and watch the crew scurry around like ants taking on the huge loads of provisions for your cruise.

Here is a typical list of stock which will be bought for the ship for a 14 night cruise.  Would you think that as a passenger you would consume all of this?

12,000 bottle of beer
2,500 litres of draught beer
5,000 bottles of wine
2,000 bottles of champagne
3,500 litres of orange juice
135,000 fresh eggs....

Oh wait the list carries on below.....

8,000 kg of meat
3,000 kg of chicken (Whole chickens)
1,000 kg of sausage
2,000 kg of bacon
13,000 ketchup sachets

So thats the meats and drink sorted.  What about the veggies and fruit?

So thats the food... well some of it,  however I worked in the duty free shops.......

I had on average each 14 night cruise....

$100,000 worth of Jewelry
$50,000 - $150,000 in watches
$5,000 in make up and cosmetics
$10,000 in perfume and aftershave
$60,000 worth of logo apparel
$20,000 in Liquor spirits
$15,000 in cigarettes
$80,000 worth of port of call t-shirts and hoodie tops which raised to $200,000 if the ship was in Alaska.
$25,000 in costume jewelry and sundries.

If we were changing Itineraries, eg. from Alaska to Panama Canal then pretty much double these quantities and we had to re stock the shops and find places to 'store' the residual stock in the time it took the ship to turn around in port so approximately from 6am - 3pm.  We then had to shower, eat and change and open the shops at 5pm to start all over again!  Anyone who says a crew members life is boring is a big fat liar!!
