You don't get to choose who you dine with!

On calling one of my clients on returning from their Royal Caribbean cruise I had an interesting conversation about their dining partners in the main restaurant.

Don't get me wrong my clients had an excellent time, which was made a little better at no fault of theirs, you will see why a little later on. I'm not mentioning the ship they were on in case I embarrass the other couple.

Anyway the story goes like this - My clients were on a table for 6, however there were only 4 people on this table.  Their dining companions were, lets say a little strange.  On the first night the waitress came over to take their order and some altercation took place between the second couple and the waitress.

Anyway my clients were left slightly embarrassed about how the second couple reacted  and thought to themselves we don't really want to dine with these people for the rest of the cruise so they decided to dine in the Windjammer (which they didn't mind doing).

Anyway the next day they got a call in their stateroom from the Food & Beverage Manager asking why they hadn't sat on their table in the main restaurant.  My clients explained what happened and the F&B Manager said he will look into it.  On the next day the Hotel Manager called their stateroom and apologized for what happened and offered them a complimentary night in 'Portofino' (the Italian specialty restaurant) and asked if they would come back to their table in the main restaurant the following night as the argumentative couple had been 'moved'.

Now my clients just wanted a relaxing holiday and yes they accepted the offer of Portofino (wouldn't you) however they declined to go back to the main restaurant because they didn't want that awkward feeling.

My clients were hounded by the F&B Manager for the next few days and then eventually left them alone.  My clients felt that this was a little 'over the top' and it created a small blemish on otherwise was an excellent cruise.

It shows that as good as the dining planning is on Royal Caribbean you just cannot choose who you eat with, unless you are travelling with other people I guess.

  1. When booking (online), I am careful to choose the title "Prof" (to which I am entitled). This usually guarantees reasonable companions, frequently senior army officers. On our one-and-only cruise with a 4 letter word beginning with "S", you were put on a table without a choice and it was surprising how many right-wing buffoons use that line.
